Due to overcrowding at the Knoxville Colored High School, the first completely new high school for Black students was opened in 1928. Austin High School was originally located at 327 Central Avenue. The school began by serving students in grades 1-6. Seventh grade was added in 1882, eighth grade in 1885, ninth in 1886 tenth in 1888, eleventh in 1921, and twelfth grade was added in 1935. In 1952 Austin moved to a new modern building at 1807 Vine Avenue, one block from its previous location. In 1968, Knoxville East and Austin High schools were merged, forming Austin-East High School which is still located at 2800 Martin Luther King Jr.
